EU BLUE CARD

A third-country national must apply for a residence permit if their expected stay in Hungary exceeds 90 days within any consecutive 180-day period. However, in certain cases, a different type of residence permit may be required. For example, in the case of a family member of an EEA citizen, the appropriate document for the purpose of employment is the residence card.

The EU Blue Card is a special type of residence permit that can be applied for by third-country nationals with high-level qualifications. Generally, it can be issued for a period between one and four years (depending on the attached documents). However, in certain cases, it can also be applied for a shorter period.

When can you apply for this type of residence permit? 

  • ​If you only hold third-country citizenship.
  • ​If you are not a family member of an EEA citizen who arrived with you in the country or whom you are joining in Hungary.​If you can prove your eligibility for a residence permit for intra-company transfer, you must apply for that type of residence permit instead. 
  • If your legal relationship with a Hungarian organization is an employment relationship.
  • Your prospective gross salary is at least HUF 658,200, although in some positions it may be lower.
  • ​If you can prove your eligibility for a residence permit for intra-company transfer, you must apply for that type of residence permit instead.
  • ​If you are on secondment from a company established in an EEA member state or Switzerland to a company established in Hungary, you cannot apply for an EU Blue Card. In this case, you must apply for a different type of residence permit. only hold third-country citizenship.

  • At least one year
  • ​At most four years
